Abington Recreation Ground
The Recreation Ground ('Rec') occupies just over 6 acres in the middle of the village behind the Cricket Ground, just to the south of the River Granta. It includes an area with children's play equipment, an outdoor gym and a Multi-User Games Area with tennis and netball equipment. It is marked out for football and is used by the Abington Football club.
The Rec is roughly triangular and can be accessed near each apex. From the east, there is a footpath from the Abington Institute alongside the school playground and from Church Lane in the north over a footbridge from a footpath alongside the scout camp site. Pedestrian and vehicular access is possible from the south by Great Abington church.
The ground is managed by a committee comprising representatives of the two parish councils, Great and Little Abington, in which it lies, together with representatives of the users. It is owned by Great Abington parish council. Committee members keep an eye on the condition of the ground and equipment, arrange for maintenance and bin emptying and also minor repairs.
Current members of the committee:
- Great Abington parish council: Sally Smith, Louise Patten, Liz Sainsbury
- Little Abington parish council: Peter Brunning, Bob Chesham, Paul Pritchard
- Cricket and Football clubs: Derek Patten, Dennis Tiplady
- Children’s Play Equipment: Charlotte Adams, Katie Mannion
